クリスマスカード

クリスマスカードは12月24日までに届くように出しましょう。受け取ったカードは、部屋の中に飾っておき、1月6日までに片付けてください。イギリスでは日頃お世話になっている、郵便配達、新聞配達、ゴミの収集の人には小さなカードと２、３ポンドを渡すのもマナーです。

ことの始まりは、ヘンリー卿。彼がこの郵送システムを利用して、クリスマスカードを友人たちに送ることを率先して奨励したということだ。これにより 、世界ではじめてのクリスマスカードが作られました。描いたのは、J.C. Horsleyで1843年のこと。裕福な家族がクリスマスディナーで乾杯している姿がリトグラフとなっています。メッセージはお馴染みのA Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you.　このカードはロンドンで、１千枚も印刷・販売されました。

ビクトリア朝時代初期には、クリスマスカードの絵柄は、キリスト教に関連のある人物、たとえば聖母マリアやイエス・キリストなどの姿が描かれましたが、カードを送ることがポピュラーになるにつれて、雪や凍った池などの景色やサンタクロースの姿などが登場するようになりました。最近では、ユーモラスなカードも多く見かけます。クリスマス前にイギリスを訪れる場合は、カードを販売しているお店やスーパー、教会などのカードコーナーを覗いてみてください。日本とは比べ物にならないくらい、たくさんのクリスマスカードでにぎわっています。

今年はサロンからゲストのお客様に「りょうのかい」のクリスマスポストカードをお送りさせていただきました。日本もクリスマスカードをお部屋に飾る文化が広がるといいですね♪
